The Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Foundation for
Earth Sciences supports visiting scholars and
resident scientists at the La Jolla branch of the
University of Californias multi-campus Institute
of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP).
Established with a gift from the late Cecil Green
in 1971, the Green Foundation holds an endowment
managed by the UCSD-IGPP Director, overseen by
an independent Board of Directors. A selection
committee comprised of IGPP faculty screens
nominees and applicants for Green Scholars.
The scholarships are awarded to Earth scientists
from around the world who wish to collaborate
with IGPP researchers. Green Scholars work at
IGPP for a period not less than two months and
not more than two years and range in experience
from recent PhD recipients to senior faculty.
Green Scholars may hold a concurrent, temporary,
salaried appointment at the University, but
Foundation support is not available to provide
salary for permanent faculty at IGPP. The funds
come from the income that the Foundation receives
on its capital. Being an independent entity,
the Foundation has some flexibility in how funds
are earmarked within the University of California
guidelines. Depending on the circumstances of
the particular Green Scholar, the funds can be
directed to cover travel, salaries, equipment,
campus services, living expenses, or some
combination of the these. Normally Green Scholars
are nominated for the position by a member of
the IGPP faculty (either teaching or research).
Occasionally an open advertisement is issued
and applications are accepted from anyone.
In addition to funding a visiting scholar
program, the funds can also be used to support
research by an IGPP scientist via purchase
of equipment or construction of facilities.
Such awards are usually directed as seed money for
new projects or for equipment that is difficult to
obtain via traditional extramural funding sources.
