The award is presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated the highest degree of technical accomplishment in the field of marine science, engineering or technology. The Marine Technology Society (MTS) is an international organization with a Mission to disseminate marine and science and technical knowledge; promote and support education for marine scientists, engineers and technicians; advance the development of tools and procures required to explore, study and further the responsible and sustainable use of the oceans; and provide services that create a broader understanding of the relevance of the marine sciences to other technologies, arts and human affairs.
Each year MTS recognizes the world leaders in oceanography. This year, Professor John A. Orcutt, Director of the Cecil H. & Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetery Physics (IGPP) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography for 18 years and Deputy Director of Scripps 2002-2006, has been awarded the prestigious Lockheed Martin Award for Excellence in Ocean Science and Technology for numerous contributions to ocean technology. These include the development and operation of effective ocean bottom seismographs and hydrophones as well as playing a leading role in initiating the NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative.
Professor Orcutt is the immediate Past President of the 50,000-member American Geophysical Union and holds appointments at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the California Institute of Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). He is a member of the American Philosophical Society. Previous awardees at Scripps include Walter Munk, Fred Spiess and Jim Cairns.
