Abstract: The formation of oceanic lithosphere is, by volume, the most significant ongoing process of chemical differentiation on Earth. Although it has been widely studied, its impact on the long-term evolution of our planet is still underappreciated. At least that is the argument I will make in this talk. Using numerical simulations of mantle dynamics, together with seismological and geochemical data, I will examine three problems in the evolution of Earth’s structure and composition. And in each case, I will argue that the process of creating, subducting and destroying oceanic lithosphere offers a plausible solution.
