Science publishes Paolo and Fricker's 18-year study of changing Antarctic ice sheet shelves

The findings of a recent study on Antarctic ice sheet thinning by IGPP geophysicists, Fernando Paolo and Helen Fricker, have been published in the March 26, 2015 issue of Science. Ph.D. student Paolo, glaciologist Fricker, and Laurie Padman, of Earth & Space Research Space Agency, reviewed 18 years of imagery gathered during European Space Agency satellite radar altimetry missions to conduct their research.

GISMOS Gathers Detailed Pre-storm Data

Track GISMOS (GNSS [Global Navigation Satellite System] Instrument System for Multistatic and Occultation Sensing) as it gathers onshore moisture feeding data (for the 3-4 days of heavy rain forecasted in Northern California). GISMOS is gathering data from its perch aboard the NOAA G-IV aircraft during the NOAA CALWATER2015 Atmospheric Rivers campaign.

IGPP Mourns former Director J. Freeman Gilbert

IGPP is very sad to report the loss J. Freeman Gilbert, former Director and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of geophysics who died on Aug.15th.

During his 53 years with IGPP, Freeman was beloved by a long list of colleagues and former students who he has mentored throughout his long and illustrious career. He was the first faculty member hired at IGPP and its second Director. His seminal work on observing and interpreting the frequencies of the normal modes of oscillation of Earth led him to create the IDA (International Deployment of Accelerometers) project, and he was instrumental in creating the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) in 1984 at a workshop held at Scripps. His awards and honors included AGU’s William Bowie Medal, the organization’s highest honor, which recognizes outstanding contributions to fundamental geophysics and for unselfish cooperation in research; membership in the National Academy of Sciences; membership in the Italian Accademia dei Lincei; and the Balzan Prize.

Zhan and Shearer deep earthquake observations published in Science

IGPP Postdoc Zhongwen Zhan and Professor Peter Shearer, in collaboration with researchers at Caltech, have shared their recent observations on the high-rupture speeds of deep earthquakes in the July 11, 2014 issue of Science. Zhan and Shearer's discoveries, which provide new insight into both deep and near-surface earthquakes, came about as they researched the aftershocks of the M8.3 Sea of Okhotsk event of May 24, 2103. http://www.sciencemag.org/content/345/6193/204.full.pdf
