Cathy Constable

Constable, Cathy

Section Head, Earth Science

Constable’s research is concerned with Earth’s magnetic field. She is particularly interested in decadal to million year variations in the geomagnetic field and how the changing structure of the magnetic field and events like geomagnetic reversals can inform scientists about processes in Earth’s deep interior. Constable also uses recent satellite magnetic field observations to study the electrical conductivity of Earth’s mantle.

Peter Shearer

PETER SHEARER

Director, Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP)

Shearer is a leader in developing new methods to improve our understanding of earthquakes in California and around the world. He analyzes large seismic data sets to learn about earthquakes and Earth’s internal structure. In global seismology, he has studied upper-mantle discontinuity properties, scattering from small-scale structures, and seismic attenuation.
