Abstract: The marine geophysical community’s increasing interest in the study of continental margins has pushed use of Ocean Bottom Seismographs (OBS) into shallower waters, resulting in instrument loss due to fishing pressure and extreme environmental conditions. Advances in seismic sensor technology have also driven OBS design to meet the demands of high fidelity, very broad band signal recording.

Through the aid of CAD, FEA, and numerical analysis, broad application platforms were developed, resulting in robust, mass producible, economical, and high-fidelity OBS capable of measurements in shallow water as well as deployments up to 7000 m deep. The design approach was the development of a suite of products that not only reduced labor during production and maintenance, but also minimized ship time required for deployment and recovery. The reduction in cost and instrument turn-around time has had a direct impact on the scope of temporary marine seismic arrays by broadening coverage while simultaneously mitigating instrument loss.
